1571 Fischer-Hallman Road Kitchener, Ontario

Heritage Impact Assessment provided by Robinson Consulting

This original log home structure was part of a farmstead located in the city of Kitchener, off Fischer-Hellman Rd. East between Huron Rd. and Bleams Rd.
The farmstead included 3 other structures, including a barn, drive shed and wood shed. These lands are known for their agriculture use predating the 19th Century.

Records of sale of the property date it back to 1798. Though the log structure is a good example of mid-19th Century log construction and rural pioneer architecture. The 1860’s being a better representation of when the primary structure was erected. The facade upon the assessment was clad in a red brick patterned Insulbrick, which would have been for preservation of the structure as well as to meet esthetic desires of the mid 20th Century. This facade cladding allowed for good preservation of the home during its more recent years of abandonment and neglect. Results of the Heritage assessment lead to the recommendation of the structure being carefully dismantled and rebuilt.

The roughly 25’ by 22’ log structure, sits on a fieldstone foundation rising 1.5-storey to a side gable roof of medium pitch. The front porch of the original structure is no longer intact, but the round log floor joist and simple windows and doors with flat wood interior casings are all well preserved historical elements of the log structure. The 1860’s log shell and architectural elements are great to repurpose for a summer cabin and guest house. To gather a complete understanding of the buildings potential, as the base for a full home with addition, deck and porch structures 3D-models show two concept designs. This one of a kind structure would be a great project to undertake. The re-use of building materials, timber frame construction, waste reducing building methods and implementation of water-use reduction as well as passive solar heating and a living roof create an eco-house, fitting the growing interest in green living design. The log structure also lends to a rap around porch, a more traditional take on a log and chink home.
