Antique Timber
In Ontario`s old barns and factories that are in need of dismantling, old, first and second growth hardwoods and softwoods become available for re-use in a number of ways. Many do make their way into new or re-conditioned structures. Some are perfect for decorative pieces such as mantles or ceiling beams, and others are simply re-milled into boardstock for use in cabinetry and flooring products.
Timeless always has an inventory of timbers on hand, from the classic antique look of the hand-hewn barn beams, to structural douglas fir timbers from the factories which sometimes are found in sizes as large as 24" x 24"!
Our Woodmizer Band Saw Mill is always "on the ready" to cut to size timbers for your next project if a specific size and look is required. Let our design team give you the look you`re after.
Handhewn
These timbers are very sought after today. The textured face showing the work of skilled axe men of a century and a half ago is hard to beat when used in a rustic retreat or new-home accents. Some barn timbers also come with a variety of pockets where timbers were once joined. Hardware such as spikes and nails are sometimes still evident. Along with nicks, bruises and scars, a sign of a past use is one of the prime attractions to these pieces for re-use. Timber with a story to tell!

Softwood
Woods of our area such as White Pine, Red Pine, Tamarack, Spruce and Hemlock are common in these barns. Although lighter in weight than the hardwoods, they can be more desirable for structural purposes because of their natural tendency to have reduced exposure to insects - unlike hardwood such as maple or beech. Kiln drying of timbers is a service which Timeless offer - prices available upon request.

- 6" x 7" to 14" x 16" are available.
- Most standards approx. 6" x 8", 8" x 9" and 10" x 10".

Hardwood
Some barns provide very nice hardwood timbers. In many areas, the hardwood beams were the wood of choice because of availability. Some barns here have been found with every timber in Black Ash! Common is the Elm … known to the old timers simply as barn timber. Due to the onslaught of the Dutch Elm Disease years ago, the best supply of sizable Elm for products such as flooring is found mainly in the barns. With a lackluster look in timber format and tough to tool in frame structures, hardwoods do find there way to the saw mill and are turned into very unique products; predominantly flooring.
Sizing:
- 6" x 7" to 12" x 12" are available.
- Most standards approx. 6" x 8", 8" x 9" and 10" x 10"
- Lengths range from 4' to 40'!
- Common range of good material is from 6' to 20'

Factory
Douglas Fir, Yellow Pine, White Pine and Hemlock are the woods derived from these structures. This timber is much sought after now. With it`s tight annual rings and rich salmon hue, Douglas Fir is reused in all kinds of projects; timber for timber-framing, flooring, trim-work, stair-parts, etc. A thought to consider when planning which type of timber to select for a project; unlike barn timbers, factory timber did not have pocketed joints and therefore are usually available in FULL timber form.

Rough Sawn

- 6" x 8" to 10" x 12" are available.
- with most standards at approx. 6" x 8", 8" x 8" and 8" x 10"

- With common range of good material from 6' to 16'

Dressed
Same materials as rough sawn but in some cases the timber had been processed at a mill to give uniform dimensioning. An interesting note: these timbers are ideal for timber structure construction … but once the joinery has been completed, the faces are worked by hand using an adze - to give a hand-hewn appearance!

- 6" x 8" to 10" x 12" are available.
- Most standards approx. 6" x 8", 8" x 8" and 8" x 10"

Resawn
We custom cut timbers to size and specifications from both factory and antique barn timbers. Faces come up fresh and clean with the vertical pattern of the bandsaw blade, which also produces a smoother finish than the circular saw. Historically, this texture can also replicate timber that was once cut on a saw known as a vertical saw (an early mechanical saw working on the same principle of a pit saw, or today`s scroll saw)
Sizing:
- 4" x 4" to 10" x 10" are available.
- Most standards approx. 6" x 6", 8" x 8" and 8" x 10"
- Lengths range from 4' to 24'
- Common range of good material from 6' to 16'
- We also manufacture 2 and 3 sided "false beams" in all species listed, which are ideal for encasing steel beams and posts in your home or just for aesthetics.

Barnboard
Probably the most recognizable antique lumber product, found in the basements of countless 1970`s renovations, this product could be the basis of many finished items from flooring to furniture. Typically found in two species types of softwoods, Pine and Hemlock. Each with their own character, but usually in an abundance of warm rich colours when the patina or inside face is hit with tongue or linseed oil. The exterior weathered gray face is a desirable look on its own, and sometimes the painted surfaces are perfect as is. But when you flip the wallboard around (if it has not been exposed to the weather), there you find the rough sawn texture, the saw markings and the rich patina that only years can give to a board. It`s great for furniture building.
Sizing:
- Various widths (3" - 18") and thickness (1/2"- 2")
- Lengths from 3' to 12' typical
- Some boards can be found at 24"+ in width!
